Over the years we have established and carried out important projects to benefit the wildlife, landscape and people at Siem Pang, which we have documented as films.
Banteng: Securing a Future in Cambodia
Using helicopter game capture techniques, Rising Phoenix translocated 16 Critically Endangered Banteng into Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary. This successful project was a "first" for Cambodia and South-East Asia.

Livelihoods and Biodiversity: A Conservation Contract
The IBIS Rice Scheme and cattle and buffalo vaccinations given to local livestock are methods used by the Rising Phoenix to contribute to the development of local communities while protecting the Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary. The IBIS Rice Scheme is a 'conservation contract'; it serves to increase household income for Cambodian farmers, offering them economic benefits. Simultaneously, the IBIS Rice Scheme means Cambodian farmers agree to not harm wildlife, hunt, or encroach within the wildlife sanctuary. The cattle and buffalo vaccination and tagging is crucial, as livestock are vulnerable to diseases, such as foot and mouth disease, and may spread diseases to wildlife within the sanctuary without prevention measures. This video was made in 2021, both the IBIS Rice Scheme and the number of livestock vaccinated have continued, and will continue to grow. The IBIS Rice Scheme is now the largest producer of IBIS Rice in Cambodia.

Vultures: Masters of the Sky
Cambodia's vultures are on the brink of extinction. Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary in northeastern Cambodia supports the last breeding population of all 3 vulture species, and efforts are underway to prevent their extinction. For the past decade, Rising Phoenix has focused on the monitoring and protection of Cambodia's endangered bird populations. In particular, the survival of three Critically Endangered vulture species: the white-rumped, slender-billed, and red-headed vultures.

Water Buffalo: Natural Landscape Management
In Siem Pang, Water Buffalo play a crucial role in forest ecology by grazing and wallowing in trapeangs, a key activity that not only deepens forest wetlands, but also enhances their biodiversity and affords a broad range of animals access to water, especially in the drought-prone dry season. Rising Phoenix has pioneered water buffalo reintroduction to Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary to re-establish ecological processes, given that the wild water buffalo is extinct in Cambodia.

The Siamese Crocodile: Totem of Healthy Wetlands
Watch our Siamese crocodile release at Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary in Cambodia. In 2022, we purchased 43 crocodiles and undertook DNA testing at a laboratory in Phnom Penh to confirm their provenance as 100% pure Siamese crocodiles. After much work to build an ideal habitat for the crocodiles, they were transported to a specially constructed soft release enclosure at Boeung Nava in Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary and released. We continued to release crocodiles in 2023 and 2024 following 2022. Our work to support and monitor the crocodiles continues today.

Law Enforcement: Safeguarding the Unique Wildlife Sanctuary
Robust law enforcement, developing community trust, and creating livelihood opportunities are essential components to safeguarding biodiversity from a range of threats, including encroachment, hunting, and logging. At Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary, the challenges are exacerbated by its proximity to the Laos border and the illicit cross-border trade in timber, wildlife, and narcotics. Rising Phoenix has an essential team of rangers to safely conduct specialized patrolling, surveillance, and investigations in both the forest and rural environments.
